Snapshot in Quality or Quantity - SLR vs Smartphones

Are you looking to get into photography and are trying to decide between a smartphone and a SLR? In the past, most people would just buy a big camera to take better pictures. But nowadays, smartphones are beginning to outpace almost all but the highest-end cameras. Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of cameras and smartphones.

What is a DSLR?

DSLR stands for digital single lens reflex. It’s a special type of camera that allows you greater control over the settings than the average point-and-shoot model, and also allows you to change lenses to achieve different effects. While that can be fun and very inspiring, DSLR photography can also be somewhat difficult to learn at first.

Great DSLRs for beginners

If you are new to photography and want to learn how to use a DSLR, you should start by looking for a camera that carries the basic features so you can master things like exposure and ISO before moving on to being able to use more sophisticated models.
Two great choices for beginners include the Canon Rebel T3 and the Nikon D3200. Both models give you the essential features without overwhelming new users. However, they operate with fairly different interfaces so it is a good idea to visit a camera shop and see the cameras in real life before you make your choice.

Smartphones: Another good choice

Nowadays, DSLR’s aren’t the only way to make beautiful photographs. As smartphone technology has advanced, the cameras in our phones now take truly stunning pictures. This is in part because the sensors have become more sophisticated, so that you can put a larger number of megapixels into a phone camera, so you can take sharp, clear images. The Nokia Lumia 1020, for example, offers 41 megapixels, which is more than even some professional-grade DSLRs.
Smartphones: Another good choice
That’s not all, though. Cameras in smartphones also come with very useful software that can help you take better pictures. Instead of forcing you to set the exposure and focus yourself, the software will allow you to just tap the screen to get the right settings. Furthermore, there are programs to correct for brightness, detect motion, and piece together better images. BlackBerry Z10 photo editing app, for example, allows users to take a series of images over a short period of time and then put together the best elements of each picture. It’s a great way to correct for squinting eyes in group portraits. There are even apps that will simulate different lenses and even convert your files into RAW so they can be edited in Photoshop.
